  Job Search Tips

Successful Job Searching

Begin your search in the Billie Harty Counseling and Career Services Center.

            Investigate opportunities.

o       Don’t overlook company web pages.

§          Not only do they provide information about job opportunities, but the directory lists the names of people you may contact.  Having a specific name makes a “cold call” much easier to do.

o       Activate your network.

§          Referrals from people you know is one of the most successful methods in the job search process.

            Research the company/organization.

o       The following are a few of the many useful resources:

§          Hoover’s Online

§          Dun and Bradstreet

§          VAULT

§          Fortune’s list of 500 biggest U. S. companies

§          Forbes’ list of best small companies

§          Industry Week’s list of 100 best managed U. S. companies

§          Standard and Poor’s Register of Corporations, Directors, and Executives

Target your resume to the specific job/position that you are seeking.

o       Deliver your resume in person, if possible. (You may get an interview on the spot.)

            Prepare for the interview.

o       Choose examples of accomplishments that illustrate your abilities.

o       Practice the interview process with the career center staff.

Promptly follow up with a thank you note and later with an email or a phone call.
